UCI Launches Center to Study AI in Writing Instruction

The University of California, Irvine's School of Education has established the WRITE AI Center, funded by a $10 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences. This five-year initiative aims to develop and assess evidence-based methods for integrating generative AI into writing instruction across higher education.

The center will conduct a nationwide survey to gauge existing AI tool usage among students and educators. Additionally, it will implement and evaluate PapyrusAI, UCI's proprietary software designed for personalized writing support, contrasting it with general AI chatbots.

A significant component is a randomized controlled trial involving over 1,000 community college students across 60 classes in three states. This study, set to begin in year three, will rigorously compare the learning outcomes, confidence, and AI literacy of students receiving AI-infused instruction versus those in traditional classrooms.

Researchers emphasize that generative AI's impact on writing education is undeniable, and the center's work focuses on finding optimal integration strategies. The WRITE AI Center's national partnership includes MDRC, the California Community Colleges' Digital Center for Innovation, the Virginia Community College System, and Houston City College.

The ultimate aim is to explore how AI can enhance student learning while ensuring the continued development of essential writing, critical thinking, and communication skills, addressing a critical question for higher education.
