Graduations Shift: New Venues, New Rules Amid Safety Concerns
30 May
Summary
- Graduations moved to new venues due to university resource strain.
- Increased security measures include metal detectors and bag checks.
- Venue changes nearly double costs for some school districts.

High school graduations in the Twin Cities are undergoing significant changes this year, impacting thousands of seniors. Some schools, including Spring Lake Park, Rosemount, and Eagan, are now holding ceremonies at the University of St. Thomas. This shift occurred after the University of Minnesota announced last fall it would cease hosting high school graduations, citing resource strain and following a shooting incident outside Mariucci Arena in June.
More than 20 high schools were affected by the University of Minnesota's decision. Blaine, Andover, and Coon Rapids have moved their ceremonies to U.S. Bank Stadium. Anoka-Hennepin Schools reported that this venue switch nearly doubled their costs, rising from $55,000 to $100,000, though they prioritized maintaining graduation dates and capacity.
Meanwhile, other schools are implementing stricter security measures. Fridley High School's graduation at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul will feature metal detectors, bag checks, and a ban on re-entry. These enhanced protocols follow a recent shooting outside the nearby St. Paul RiverCentre linked to a gang rivalry after a Metro State University graduation. Both the St. Paul RiverCentre and school districts emphasize their commitment to safety through collaboration with law enforcement.
