Students in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, returned this September to a newly renovated Mangilaluk School. Junior kindergarten to Grade 9 students are now housed in the main building, while high school classes are being held at the Aurora College facility. The school's exterior boasts vibrant new colors, replacing its previous aged yellow.
Inside, the improvements are substantial. Classrooms have been enlarged, and hallways widened. Originally constructed in 1990, the school's renovation included significant upgrades, with its gym, the only one in the community of about 1,000, reopening after years of work.
Principal Ephraim Warren reported that most renovations are nearing completion. Enhancements include new lockers, additional and accessible washrooms, and improved spaces for presentations and student gathering. Staff morale is high, with teachers benefiting from new desks and writing boards, bringing the school up to advanced standards.
Last year, students were accommodated in a smaller space now being converted into a library, kitchen, fitness center, and classrooms. For improved traffic flow, two separate entrances were built for younger children (junior kindergarten to Grade 2), along with a dedicated porch for parents. A new parking lot has also been created. Warren anticipates all construction will be finished by the end of November, with the gym accessible in October.
