Since its founding in 1951, it has evolved into a premier center for medical education and patient care, with its alumni contributing to healthcare globally. The college continues to expand its services and facilities.

The institution remains a vital healthcare hub, attending to approximately 8,000 outpatients and admitting around 500 inpatients each day. It offers MBBS programs for 250 students annually, alongside 24 specialty and 16 super-specialty departments, catering to a wide range of medical needs.

Currently, the medical college is undergoing a significant transformation with the second phase of a ₹717.29-crore master plan in progress. Health Minister Veena George highlighted the recent establishment of new departments, including critical care, genetics, and fetal medicine, further enhancing the institution's advanced medical capabilities.
