Texas Vouchers: 141,000 Families Seek New School Options
6 Mar
Summary
- Over 2,100 Texas private schools joined the $1B school voucher program.
- More than 141,000 families applied for tuition funds by March 17.
- Schools may exit if state rules conflict with their faith-based mission.

Texas is piloting its largest-ever school choice program, the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), a $1 billion initiative offering tuition funds for private schools. As of March 1, over 141,000 families had applied for vouchers, with applications closing on March 17. Over 2,100 private schools across the state have chosen to participate.
Schools are evaluating the program with some caution, considering potential "strings attached" to the state funds. Craig Smith, head of Trinity Christian Academy, noted that while they anticipate benefits, schools will withdraw if government mandates, such as changes to admission policies or faith-based mission, arise. Families applying for TEFA funds can expect to hear back in early April, impacting the ongoing school admissions process.
