Community Buses Revive Telangana School
1 Jul
Summary
- Villagers raised funds for two buses worth Rs 50 lakh.
- Free transport now ferries 100 students from eight villages.
- Initiative overcame transport hurdles to boost admissions.
In a remarkable display of community spirit, the Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) in Kollapadakal village, Ranga Reddy district, has seen a surge in admissions. This revival is largely due to an initiative by villagers who pooled funds to purchase two school buses valued at Rs 50 lakh. This effort directly tackled the primary obstacle to enrollment: the lack of reliable transportation from surrounding hamlets.
The initiative, spearheaded by the village sarpanch, successfully garnered contributions from corporations, local philanthropists, and neighboring village leaders. As of June 30, 2026, these buses are actively transporting students from eight nearby villages, covering distances of 3 to 6 kilometers. The service operates even if only one student requires transport from a particular village, ensuring no child is left behind.
Parents have expressed significant relief, noting that the free bus service has eliminated concerns about student safety and commute times. Previously, reliance on delayed public transport or the financial strain of private school buses was a major deterrent. The provision of dedicated school buses has ensured regular attendance, particularly for children whose families previously faced challenges related to distance and weather.
The program began in 2025 with a rented bus, which increased enrollment by approximately 40 students. However, the monthly expenses of nearly Rs 1 lakh for rent and operations proved unsustainable. This led to the successful appeal for donations to acquire the new buses. While the buses are now owned, the community continues to manage recurring costs for fuel, maintenance, and staff, actively seeking ongoing support to sustain this vital educational service.
