Third-grade students at St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, Tennessee, recently completed a unique STEM project: designing a wedding dress for pop superstar Taylor Swift. Inspired by the classic tale of Cinderella, the project allowed the students to engage with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a creative and relatable way.
The 'Merry Makers' project began after Swift's engagement, tapping into the students' excitement. The girls worked collaboratively in the school's Makerspaces, brainstorming design elements and focusing on details like necklines and skirt styles, drawing inspiration from various fashion designers. They even discussed cultural interpretations of ceremonial colors.
Beyond the wedding dress, which featured a sweetheart bodice and a tulle skirt, the students designed a collection of whimsical accessories. These included a veil with laser-cut cat details, golden cat ears, and heels with cat motifs. A special touch was a hand-sewn carrier for Swift's cats, ensuring they could be part of the celebration.
