Super-Speciality Seats Empty: TN Healthcare at Risk
29 Mar
Summary
- 141 super-speciality seats for service candidates remained vacant.
- Vacancies could impact neurosurgery, nephrology, and cardiac surgery.
- Patient care may be affected by a long-term dip in specialized doctors.

In Tamil Nadu, a concerning trend of vacant super-speciality medical seats persists, prompting warnings from senior doctors about future impacts on state healthcare. As of the first counselling round, 141 of the 215 super-speciality seats designated for service candidates remained unfilled. This ongoing issue threatens to deplete the number of government doctors in critical fields.
Specialities such as neurosurgery, nephrology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and surgical gastroenterology are particularly at risk. The Tamil Nadu government reserves 50% of its 422 DM/MCh seats for in-service candidates. The continued vacancies raise fears of a prolonged deficit in specialized medical expertise, ultimately compromising patient treatment and care within the public health system.
