Teens Lead Charge for Phone-Free Schools

Across the United States, a growing number of students are advocating for their digital wellbeing and creating programs for tech-free learning environments. These efforts come as school phone policies are implemented in at least 39 states and Washington D.C. Young organizers acknowledge the necessity of screen-time bans but highlight that current policies are often inconsistently enforced and fail to address underlying issues like social pressure and isolation.

Student advocates emphasize the need for comprehensive digital wellness education. Initiatives like GENUp are pushing for state bills that mandate teaching students about the effects of social media and AI on mental health. These programs aim to equip students with the understanding and skills to make better choices regarding their device usage and mitigate its impact on their health and focus.

Beyond policy advocacy, students are proactively shaping phone ban implementations at their schools. Through student-led pilots and advisory groups, they are determining the most effective policies that balance restrictions with student needs, such as allowing phone use during breaks. Youth-led organizations also provide mini-grants to support innovative tech-free activities on campus, fostering real-world connections and healthier student interactions.
