Hampton High School students have completed an immersive nine-month project, culminating in the successful launch of a 500-pound dugout canoe. This initiative, a partnership involving Hampton City Schools, the Fort Monroe Foundation, and the Maritime Academy, provided students with deep cultural and historical insights.
Students learned about the history of Virginia's Indigenous peoples through dedicated lessons. They also gained practical experience in constructing an authentic dugout canoe, a process involving burning, hatchet work, and hollowing out a large pine log. This hands-on approach aimed to create a memorable and impactful learning experience.
The canoe, capable of carrying one to three people, underwent a successful float test before its recent launch. It will be on display at the Casemate Museum of Fort Monroe for the summer. Afterward, the canoe is slated to return to Hampton High School for permanent display in the fall.
