19-Year-Old's Legal Battle Secures MBBS Admission
13 Feb
Summary
- A 19-year-old student successfully argued his case in the Supreme Court.
- The Supreme Court ordered provisional MBBS admission for NEET-qualified EWS candidates.
- The student pursued medicine despite qualifying for engineering.

A 19-year-old student named Atharva Chaturvedi, who had qualified for NEET twice, recently secured a significant legal victory in the Supreme Court. He argued his own case, highlighting the Madhya Pradesh government's failure to implement EWS reservations in private medical colleges. The Supreme Court invoked its powers under Article 142 to direct provisional MBBS admission for NEET-qualified EWS candidates, including Atharva, for the 2025-26 session. This ruling came after Atharva downloaded SLP formats from the court's website and drafted his own petition from Jabalpur.
Atharva's journey to the Supreme Court was unexpected, as he pursued medicine despite also qualifying for engineering. His father, a lawyer, noted Atharva’s self-taught legal acumen, observing courtroom proceedings virtually during the COVID-19 lockdown. The Supreme Court's decision acknowledged that admissions should not be denied due to a state's policy gaps. While this is a major win, the family still faces the uncertainty of undefined EWS fees in private colleges.
