Region of Waterloo Public Health has alerted more than 13,000 students about overdue vaccination records, with failure to comply potentially leading to school suspensions. Approximately 4,385 secondary students received notices on December 10, and about 9,400 elementary students are being notified this week. Students are required by the Immunization of School Pupils Act to have documented proof of vaccination against nine diseases or a valid exemption on file.
Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, the region's medical officer of health, emphasized that these measures protect schools and the community, aiding rapid response during disease outbreaks. High school students must update their records by 4:30 p.m. on April 6 to avoid suspension on April 9. Elementary students have a deadline of 4:30 p.m. on May 4, with suspensions starting May 7. These numbers are lower than the previous year's initial notices.
