The Stanhope One-Room Schoolhouse in Pine Grove is celebrating its 150th anniversary, marking a significant milestone for this historic educational site. As Schuylkill County's only remaining one-room schoolhouse, it serves as a vital link to the past, offering visitors a glimpse into early 20th-century education.
Following extensive restoration efforts led by the Pinegrove Historical Society, the schoolhouse, originally built in 1876, now operates as a museum. The site is open to the public from May to September 2026, featuring special exhibits and newly acquired artifacts, including a 48-star flag and historical student notebooks.
A new book, "Inspiring Generations," co-authored by Linda Mills and Terry Winters, documents the experiences of former students. The book includes interviews with individuals who attended the schoolhouse during its operational years, providing rich historical context about life and education in Pine Grove a century ago.
Throughout the summer of 2026, the schoolhouse will host a series of educational events. These include talks by a history professor on one-room education, a presentation on regional agriculture, and a session focusing on the history of books. The site also continues its efforts to enhance its educational environment, such as reinstalling the original schoolhouse bell.
