Special Needs School Rebuilds After Devastating Fire
30 Mar
Summary
- Pupils resettled within a month after a fire destroyed their school.
- Donations helped transform unused rooms into new learning spaces.
- Focus remains on pupils' well-being and continuous education.

A month after a fire ravaged the Promise School, a facility dedicated to children with special educational needs, its 85 pupils have resumed their education. The blaze, which occurred on February 22nd, left the original Okehampton, Devon school building in ruins and prompted an immediate need for new learning environments. Staff worked diligently to convert empty and previously unused spaces into functional classrooms across three distinct temporary locations: Okehampton College, Wardhayes Sixth Form Centre, and Okehampton Primary School.
Principal Quentin Gunderson highlighted the significant efforts involved in establishing these three sites, emphasizing the positive outcome. He noted that donations of essential items like books, toys, and supplies were instrumental in creating 'private and secure' learning and play areas. These makeshift classrooms, though requiring substantial initial work and cleaning, now offer the children 'fantastic learning spaces.' The school community, described as a 'little family,' is now reunited and focused on providing consistent support and education.
