Dad Battles Council Over Son's Special School Needs
11 Mar
Summary
- A father challenges an EHCP for his autistic, ADHD son.
- Concerns raised over council procedures and consultation.
- Family and school agree a specialist placement is needed.

A father from the Burnley area is in a dispute with Lancashire County Council over his son Michael's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Michael, who is 12 years old, has autism and ADHD and currently attends a mainstream school. His father, Kieron, asserts that both the family and Michael's school believe a specialist school is necessary to adequately support the boy's complex needs.
Kieron claims that the council issued a final EHCP for Michael prematurely and without the required consultation with his parents. He highlighted that an educational psychologist previously assessed Michael at age 11, noting he had the mental age of a seven-year-old. The father has lodged a formal complaint and rejects the council's suggestion of mediation, stating it could take years, a timeline unacceptable for a child currently in crisis.
