School Build Forces Library Shut for Two Years
22 Mar
Summary
- Village library closure extended until summer 2027 due to school construction.
- Temporary closure is due to noise, dust, and disruption from building work.
- No suitable alternative venues found within the village for a temporary library.

Somercotes Library's temporary closure has been extended until June 2027, significantly delaying its reopening. This decision by Derbyshire County Council arises from the ongoing redevelopment of Somerlea Park Junior School, located on the same site. The project, initiated in June 2025 and now slated for completion in June 2027, involves demolishing existing buildings and constructing a new two-storey school.
The council cited unavoidable noise, dust, and heavy construction traffic from the school build as reasons for the extended closure. They determined that operating the library amidst such disruption would severely compromise the experience for both customers and staff, with safety implications also noted. Efforts to find alternative temporary premises within Somercotes were unsuccessful, with relocation and fit-out costs deemed too high.
During this period, library staff and services are being provided at the Pinxton branch, located four miles away, and South Normanton, three miles distant. Despite the extended closure, the council reports no negative feedback regarding the current arrangements. The new school will accommodate 240 pupils aged seven to 11, featuring eight classrooms and a dining hall.
