Sākewew High School in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, is embarking on a transition to a new governing structure. The school, established nearly 25 years ago and serving approximately 250 students, primarily of First Nations and Métis heritage, will see its current management partners withdraw by June 2027. Living Sky School Division and Light of Christ Catholic Schools cited the growth of Indigenous education supports within their own divisions as the reason for ending their joint partnership.
The school community, including students, staff, and parents, has been informed of the impending changes. Sākewew High School is known for its strong focus on Indigenous culture, offering specialized programs like Following Their Voices to boost student retention and providing a supportive environment with small class sizes. Students like Tommy Gamble, 17, attest to the school's positive impact on their engagement and sense of belonging.
Currently overseen by the Battlefords First Nations Joint Board of Education and the First Nations Education Authority, Sākewew is working to establish a new board. This new governance model is expected to involve the First Nations Education Authority, supported by the Battlefords Tribal Council and Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs. Crucially, the school is seeking provincial support and funding mechanisms for students attending from within North Battleford and Battleford, as current funding flows through the existing school divisions.
Discussions are underway with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education to establish these funding agreements. Additionally, new funding agreements with individual First Nations and the federal government will be necessary for students living on-reserve. The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs are advocating for a collaborative approach to ensure the continued success of Sākewew High School, a vital space for Indigenous identity and learning.
