Sixth Form Courses Axed on First Day
12 Sep
Summary
- A-level courses were canceled on pupils' first day.
- Only 17 students arrived for induction at the Essex school.
- Low student numbers and funding challenges cited as reasons.
Pupils attending Mossbourne Fobbing Academy for their first day of sixth form on September 4, 2026, were unexpectedly informed that several A-level courses had been canceled. Only 17 students arrived for their induction, a number significantly lower than anticipated by the school.
In a letter sent to families, the vice-principal announced that further maths, geography, and dance courses would not be offered. The school's trust, Mossbourne Federation, attributed these cancellations to "significantly lower than hoped" student numbers and an "exceptionally challenging" funding environment.
There is concern that additional subjects may also face review. One affected student expressed anger and a feeling of being abandoned, with only one of his chosen courses still running. He was advised to switch to more traditional subjects.
