Sheffield College Faces Funding Probe

An external audit is currently investigating The Sheffield College's provision for English language learners. This investigation, initiated by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in July 2025, stems from allegations of maladministration and potential fraud.
SYMCA, which provides £11.6m annually for adult skills at the college, launched the inquiry after auditors flagged concerns. While no fraud has been definitively found, the college acknowledges setting aside funds as a contingency.
The audit is specifically examining "achievement claims and associated certification for ESOL students in 2023/24." South Yorkshire Police have confirmed they are not currently investigating the matter.
