29 May
Summary
- Whittier Elementary School is getting a new playground.
- The project involves students, the city, and nonprofits.
- Construction is expected to finish by summer.

A ceremonial groundbreaking recently took place at John G. Whittier Elementary School in Scranton for a schoolyard improvement project. This initiative aims to transform the outdoor space into a dynamic area for students and the neighborhood. The project mirrors a similar successful conversion at John F. Kennedy Elementary School.
The Whittier schoolyard project is a collaborative effort involving the Scranton School District, the city, and two non-profit organizations, the Trust for Public Land and Valley in Motion. The design process included input from Whittier fourth graders, who will be graduating soon.
Students' creative input is a cornerstone of the project, addressing needs for play, creativity, rest, and environmental stewardship. The new schoolyard will feature inclusive play equipment, a multipurpose turf field, a running track, picnic areas, native plants, and an outdoor classroom with green stormwater infrastructure.
Construction on the Whittier schoolyard began in early June and is slated for completion this summer. This revamped space is anticipated to foster socialization, imagination, and provide a secure environment for children to play and interact.
