Schools Mandate Newspapers: A Screen Time Cure?

In response to concerns over screen addiction, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have mandated daily newspaper reading in schools to cultivate a strong reading culture. Educators in Delhi schools have long embraced this practice, using newspapers to enhance general knowledge, discuss current events, and as a resource for English lessons. While some see it as a cheap and effective tool, others are unsure if it directly reduces screen time.

Education experts acknowledge the benefits of daily newspaper reading but question its proven impact on screen time reduction, noting a lack of research. They suggest shifting focus from passive consumption to active production of news. Experts also highlight that while print reading may offer deeper engagement, children can still access digital information at home.

Historically, institutions like NCERT have recommended newspapers in classrooms since the 1970s, and Delhi government schools followed this until 2018. While some educators and psychologists believe structured reading routines can act as a healthy habit replacement, reducing overall screen time and improving focus, the definitive link remains a subject of ongoing discussion.
