School's 'Zero Tolerance' Sparks Trauma, Ex-Pupils Claim
2 Apr
Summary
- Strict school culture allegedly led to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
- Former students report public humiliation and a hostile learning environment.
- A review found disciplinary practices were actively harmful and needed change.

Former pupils of Mossbourne Community Academy have come forward with serious allegations regarding the school's "zero tolerance" disciplinary culture. They claim the environment fostered emotional abuse and humiliation, contributing to significant mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Ruby Greensides, now 23, stated her two years at the sixth form were the worst of her life, leading to stress-related diabetes. Chloe Amia Rohleder-Cook, 26, believes the school significantly worsened her undiagnosed mental health issues, contributing to complex PTSD. Michael Gibson, 22, described a constant state of self-criticism and fear of judgment.
A safeguarding review, published in December 2023, led by Hackney's former director of children's services, Sir Alan Wood, found evidence of shouting and humiliation. The review concluded that the school's disciplinary culture was not merely strict but actively harmful for some pupils, necessitating systemic change.
Despite these findings, the Department for Education noted the Mossbourne Federation had yet to publicly endorse Sir Alan's conclusions. The former students are now advocating for a national inquiry, with a petition gathering 20 testimonies, and emphasize the long-term damage caused by their experiences.
