School's Phone Pouches Spark Phenomenal Change
18 May
Summary
- Phone pouches have made a significant difference in student socialisation and focus.
- Students must lock phones away in pouches that unlock outside school gates.
- The policy aims to create a safer, more focused learning environment for students.

Six months ago, Liberty Academy in Hull implemented a phone-free policy, requiring students to secure their devices in lockable pouches. These pouches are only unlockable with magnets placed outside the school's gates, ensuring phones remain stored throughout the school day.
Executive principal Chris Mulqueen stated the policy has brought a "phenomenal difference," enhancing student socialisation and creating a more predictable school environment. He believes it provides a safe space for children to simply be children.
Students report significant benefits, noting reduced phone usage and improved educational focus. While initially uncertain about contacting parents, students now use school reception for urgent calls. Many feel communication among peers has increased, potentially boosting grades.
Staff conduct checks, sometimes using metal detectors, to ensure phones are properly secured. Mulqueen emphasized the "significant impact on behaviour" and that the policy teaches resilience and appropriate technology use.
The Heartwood Learning Trust, which runs Liberty Academy, has extended this policy to its five other schools in York and North Yorkshire. This initiative predates the UK government's announcement of a legal ban on smartphones in English schools.
The pouches cost £15 each, with the trust investing heavily. Mulqueen calculates the cost at approximately £3 per student annually, deeming it a worthwhile investment for a calm and peaceful learning environment.
