School Apologizes for Toilet Pass Medical Evidence Demand
6 Oct
Summary
- School demanded medical evidence for toilet passes.
- A GP practice criticized the school's policy.
- The school principal stated the letter was sent in error.
Somercotes Academy in Lincolnshire issued an apology following criticism from a local GP practice regarding its policy on toilet passes.
The school had previously informed parents that pupils needing a toilet pass would require supporting medical evidence from a healthcare professional.
This directive was met with disapproval from Marsh Medical Practice, which deemed the request an inappropriate use of NHS resources, emphasizing that toilet use is a fundamental health need.
Katy Black, the principal of Somercotes Academy, addressed the situation by stating that the letter was sent out erroneously and apologized for any ensuing confusion. She reiterated that students are permitted to use the restroom during school hours, including during lessons, with established procedures in place to facilitate this.
Black further explained that while the school values communication regarding students' medical conditions to provide better support, it does not mandate a GP's note for toilet access. The academy's communication on September 29 had initiated a review of existing toilet passes, requesting medical documentation on official letterhead to justify access needs.
