Parents Lose £10k Amid School Attendance Crisis

A significant financial burden is being placed on parents whose children are not attending school, with a new study indicating substantial income losses. A survey of 2,000 parents found that 42% have experienced losses of up to £10,000 because they had to take unpaid leave to care for children refusing to attend classes. More than a third of these parents reported taking at least a month of unpaid leave.

This situation unfolds against a backdrop of a worsening school attendance crisis in England, where 1.34 million pupils were persistently absent during the 2024-25 academic year. The number of children entirely absent from education has increased by 19% since 2024, prompting Ofsted to label it a "national attendance scandal." Parents are left navigating severe anxiety and school-related stress in their children without adequate support.

Personal accounts illustrate the profound impact. One single mother from London reported losing £15,000 annually and had to abandon her career as a media consultant for freelance work to cope. She stated that counselling and support were not readily available for her daughter's anxiety. Another parent from Hertfordshire described feeling overwhelmed, constantly worrying, and like she was "carrying the weight of everything on her shoulders."

The research, commissioned by Minerva Virtual Academy, also highlights a critical gap in resources, with nearly nine in 10 parents receiving no clear guidance on alternative education. The founder of the academy emphasized the need to break the taboo, improve signposting, and intervene earlier to prevent families from reaching a breaking point.
