Schilling Elementary's Green Revolution Takes Root

Schilling Elementary School in Newark has embarked on an ambitious environmental project, becoming the first in its district to establish a pocket forest on campus. Students from all grade levels are participating, transforming a 12,000-square-foot area into a Miyawaki forest, a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki.

This ultra-dense forest is designed to rapidly capture carbon, mitigate urban heat island effects, and boost biodiversity in the local ecosystem. Science teacher Neelam Patil, who spearheaded the initiative, emphasized the forest's potential to cool the planet and reintroduce a symphony of nature, attracting birds and butterflies.

The project has garnered significant support from various entities. The Philanthropic Ventures Foundation provided the majority of funding, with additional contributions from Newark's Mexico Tortilla Factory, Oakland's Bee Green Recycling and Supply, Urban Forest Friends, a Rotary Club grant, and the school's PTA.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the Miyawaki forest will serve as an outdoor STEM classroom, aligning with Next Generation Science Standards and offering students hands-on learning experiences. Principal Dr. Jessica Pollock noted the opportunity for students to build something valuable for their community and school, potentially influencing their future aspirations.

Students like Paola Sanchez, Andrew Gregoire, and Caleya Muñoz shared their hopes for increased wildlife and a more beautiful school. Teachers highlighted how the forest extends learning beyond textbooks, providing real-world applications and a tranquil space for students. This initiative represents a commitment to environmental stewardship and innovative education at Schilling Elementary.
