The University of Saskatchewan has officially launched two pioneering master's degree programs in occupational therapy and speech-language pathology. These programs represent a significant first for Saskatchewan, designed to foster local talent and retain essential healthcare professionals within the province. With an investment exceeding $37 million from the provincial government, the initiative aims to meet the growing demand for these specialized services.
The first cohorts for both programs will begin their studies this fall, with 40 students enrolled in each. This new academic offering addresses a long-standing gap, as students previously had to leave Saskatchewan for such postgraduate education. The programs are expected to equip graduates with the skills needed to serve both rural and urban communities, supporting patients with communication and developmental needs.
Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill emphasized that training professionals within Saskatchewan increases the likelihood they will build their careers in the province, directly benefiting patients. Students like Brooklyn Anderson and Molly Morris expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to study closer to home, anticipating they will remain in Saskatchewan to practice their chosen professions after graduation.
