RRC Polytech Saves MITT Programs Amidst Closure
9 Apr
Summary
- Red River College Polytechnic will absorb 19 of 20 programs from Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology.
- MITT closes due to a nearly 60% drop in international student enrollment revenue.
- New student intakes for transferred programs will begin at RRC Polytech starting next fall.

Red River College Polytechnic (RRC Polytech) will take over the majority of programs offered by the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT), which is slated for closure. Nineteen out of MITT's twenty programs will transition to RRC Polytech, ensuring continued capacity for these vocational courses. New student admissions for these programs will commence through RRC Polytech in the upcoming fall academic term.
MITT announced its closure in January, citing an unsustainable financial model driven by a sharp decrease in international student enrollment. Revenue from international students reportedly fell from $23.2 million to $9.5 million. As a result, some programs specifically targeting international students have already ceased at MITT.
RRC Polytech also plans to acquire MITT's Henlow Bay and Fultz Boulevard buildings, establishing a new campus in south Winnipeg. The polytechnic will continue to offer vocational programming for high school students in partnership with school divisions. Continuing education classes are also expected to continue at RRC Polytech.
MITT served 4,663 students in the 2024-25 academic year, with nearly 2,000 being international students. The transfer of programs aims to maintain training in in-demand skills, supporting Manitoba's labor market needs.
