Students Plead to Save Roosevelt's Fashion Program
12 Mar
Summary
- Fashion Design course faces elimination due to low enrollment.
- Students argue the course provides vital career preparation.
- A final decision on the program's future is expected soon.

Roosevelt High School's unique Fashion Design program is under threat of closure. District officials are considering eliminating the course, which is the sole fashion pathway within the Career Technical Education offerings. The primary reason cited for this potential cut is persistently low enrollment numbers.
Students and alumni have voiced strong opposition, testifying before the Fresno Unified board. They argue that the program provides essential practical skills, industry insight, and hands-on experience. These elements, they contend, are critical for preparing students for both higher education and future careers. The curriculum includes everything from basic sewing to orchestrating a senior fashion show.
District Human Resources representative David Chavez confirmed that enrollment has remained below 20 students, despite the class cap being set at 24. He stated that sufficient student interest has not been demonstrated. The district expects to render a final decision regarding the Fashion Design course's future within the next few weeks.
If the program is dissolved, the school principal has assured that interested students can explore related opportunities within Roosevelt's Theater Program. The elimination of the Fashion Design course would not impact the Theater Program itself.
