A pilot program involving retired Honolulu police officers as school resource officers (SROs) is expanding to a fourth Oahu public school, Nanakuli High & Intermediate School. The program, initially launched six months ago at Kaimuki, Kapolei, and Waianae high schools, focuses on mentorship and prevention rather than traditional policing. This expansion aims to foster a greater sense of safety and provide proactive support for students, particularly during critical intermediate school years.
Early results from the pilot have been promising. Kaimuki High School reported an 8% decrease in student behavior incidents in spring 2026 compared to the previous year, with students arriving to class more punctually. Kapolei High School saw a 20% reduction in misconduct violations, while Waianae High School experienced a 25% decline in campus incidents between fall 2025 and spring 2026. These officers also collaborate with counselors and promote law enforcement career pathways.
School leaders have noted increased student engagement and a perception of enhanced campus safety. The program utilizes experienced, retired officers, allowing the department to deploy seasoned professionals without impacting street patrol resources. The initiative, funded by the city at over $1 million, remains in its pilot phase and is subject to ongoing evaluation as it potentially extends to more campuses.
