Summary
- MP seeks reduction of postgraduate medical AIQ from 50% to 15%.
- Demand aims to align PG quota with undergraduate levels.
- Focus on Telangana's significant investment in medical education.

Former MP B. Vinod Kumar has formally requested Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to decrease the All India Quota (AIQ) for postgraduate medical admissions. Kumar proposed reducing the current 50% AIQ for PG seats to 15%, bringing it in line with the undergraduate medical seat AIQ.
This plea is particularly relevant for Telangana, which has made substantial investments in establishing new medical colleges and expanding both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The demand stems from the desire to ensure that medical graduates from Telangana can access a larger proportion of PG seats within the state, funded by public expenditure.
Kumar clarified that the request does not oppose the AIQ principle or national merit but argues the 50% PG AIQ is disproportionately high. He suggested that a reduced AIQ would still facilitate national mobility while enabling states to bolster their specialist healthcare systems with a greater share of limited PG seats.
The former MP also advocated for a state-wise analysis of the AIQ system. He believes such transparent data would objectively assess the equity of the current 50% formula for all states, promoting a balanced federal approach rather than seeking preferential treatment.
