RAF Shawbury, the world's oldest military helicopter training school, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Located near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, the No.1 Flying Training School has a distinguished history.
Prince Harry completed his helicopter flying course at the base in October 2009, followed by Prince William in January 2010. Both royals were frequently seen in the local Shropshire area during their training.
The school currently trains approximately 150 individuals annually, with about 100-120 graduating each year. Of these graduates, 60% to 70% become pilots, while the remainder serve in specialized rear crew roles.
The anniversary will be commemorated with a parade in Market Drayton and an evening event honoring past and present personnel and supporters of RAF Shawbury.
