The Punjab government has launched a statewide menstrual health education program targeting more than 3.4 lakh girl students in government schools. This initiative, announced on May 28, seeks to enhance adolescent health and create a more inclusive environment for girls from Classes VI to X.
The "Menstrual Hygiene Curriculum" was developed in collaboration with WASH United. It utilizes Punjabi language, storytelling, and interactive methods, centering on a character named Ruby to simplify discussions about menstruation, hygiene, and body changes. This approach aims to build self-confidence in a safe learning space.
To support the program, over 7,200 teachers have undergone training, with many reporting the curriculum effectively breaks taboos and reduces stigma. A pilot project involving over 45,000 students showed high teacher confidence and support for the program's expansion, indicating its positive impact and effectiveness compared to previous methods.
