SPPU Girls Hostel Mess License Suspended Over Hygiene
9 Oct
Summary
- SPPU Girl's Hostel mess license suspended due to hygiene.
- FDA found insects, hygiene, and documentation issues.
- This is the second SPPU mess licence suspension this year.

The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Girl's Hostel mess has had its food license suspended for a fortnight by the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). This action follows multiple complaints and online videos highlighting hygiene concerns and the presence of insects in the food served. The suspension, effective after an inspection on October 6, addresses serious violations found by FDA officers.
During the inspection, officers noted issues such as cockroach activity, inadequate food hygiene, cleaning deficiencies, and poor personal hygiene among food handlers. Documentation lapses, including missing medical and pest control reports, also contributed to the FDA's findings. A hearing was conducted on October 8, resulting in the 14-day suspension, after which the mess can apply for reinstatement upon rectifying the issues.
This is not the first such incident at SPPU this year; the Refectory Mess's license was also suspended in June for similar reasons. Student representatives have welcomed the FDA's action but are urging the university administration to implement permanent measures, including considering a central mess directly managed by the university to ensure student safety and food quality.
