Summary
- Students designed a self-sustaining space farm for healthy living.
- The project secured first place in an international contest.
- It proposes a model for food production beyond Earth.

Students from Pune's Vidya Valley School have triumphed at the 2025 Live Healthy in Space International Contest, securing first place in the Ninth Grade Small Group Category. The competition saw 2,627 projects from 14,636 students across 12 countries. Their winning project, Kosmosagri - A Self-Sustaining Agricultural Settlement for Healthy Living in Space, offers a novel approach to off-world food production.
The proposed settlement is strategically located at the Sun-Mars L1 Lagrange Point, ensuring consistent solar energy for its agricultural and life-support systems. The design features interconnected agricultural torii employing diverse farming methods like aeroponics, aquaponics, and hydroponics, all managed by automated Arduino-based systems. Environmental conditions are meticulously controlled via sensors.
Further enhancing its sustainability, Kosmosagri integrates the Four Sisters polyculture farming method and aquaponics, promoting ecological balance. Energy is derived from solar panels, with agricultural waste converted into biofuels. Water is efficiently recycled through multi-stage purification systems, supporting long-term human habitation in space.
