Summary
- Student died after electric shock from a faulty water cooler.
- Protests erupted, demanding administration accountability and safety.
- Inquiry ordered, safety audits mandated across 10 districts.

A first-year MBA student, Chaitanya Chavan, 23, died nearly 10 days after suffering a severe electric shock from a water cooler at Pune's College of Agriculture on March 14. The incident occurred when Chavan attempted to adjust a faulty plug. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and passed away on Tuesday.
His death has led to significant student protests, with demonstrators citing the administration's alleged negligence and ignored safety concerns over the past two years. Students recounted that Chavan was barefoot at the time, potentially exacerbating the shock.
The vice-chancellor of Mahatma Phule Krushi Vidyapeeth, Vilas Kharche, has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. A committee has been formed to investigate, and safety audits, including fire and structural checks, will be conducted across all college campuses in 10 districts.
Financial aid was provided to Chavan during his treatment, with contributions from faculty, the chief minister's relief fund, and the deputy chief minister. Further assistance is being arranged for his family. Protests are ongoing until definitive action is taken against those responsible.
