15,000+ Peel Students At Risk of Suspension for Vaccines
13 Mar
Summary
- Over 15,000 Peel students face potential suspension due to vaccination status.
- Parents must report childhood vaccine records directly to public health.
- COVID-19 pandemic contributed to increased reporting backlogs and potential suspensions.
In Peel Region, over 15,800 students are facing potential school suspensions because their vaccination records are not up-to-date with Peel Public Health. This situation, the highest in recent years, is partly due to pandemic-related disruptions in routine immunizations and reporting. Families are responsible for submitting vaccine records, a task some parents were unaware of.
Peel Public Health has issued notification letters, but some parents report not receiving them. The first wave of potential suspensions is scheduled to begin March 31. Students can be suspended for up to 20 days if records are not updated. The health unit is offering clinics to help families catch up on immunizations and reporting requirements.
