Hostel Crisis Hits Patna University Students
24 Aug
Summary
- Over 4,000 students admitted, but only 2,500 hostel spots available.
- Students face long commutes or expensive private lodging.
- University directs colleges to renew existing hostel allotments.
Patna University is grappling with a significant hostel accommodation shortage for its newly admitted undergraduate students. Over 4,000 first-semester students have been admitted, but the combined capacity of all hostels across four semesters is approximately 2,500, creating a substantial deficit.
This disparity is forcing many students, especially those from outside Patna, to endure lengthy daily commutes or bear the high costs of private accommodation. Parents report that the lack of consistent hostel access is hindering students' ability to attend classes regularly.
The university has instructed colleges to renew hostel seats for students promoted to higher semesters. Applications for accommodation from both new undergraduate and postgraduate students are expected to be invited soon via the Samarth portal.
This accommodation challenge is an ongoing issue, with only about 20% of undergraduate students historically securing hostel places, highlighting a persistent gap between enrollment numbers and available residential facilities.
