NY School Scraps Plan for Robot Teacher Assistant

The Salamanca City Central School District in upstate New York has paused a controversial $60,000 program to introduce an android teacher's aide named Sally into its high school classrooms. This initiative was intended to support technology and robotics education by allowing students to interact with advanced technology.

Sally, an android from Realbotix, was designed to assist human teachers and provide students with hands-on experience regarding robot maintenance and updates. The district's superintendent cited the need to expose rural students to high-level technology, which they would otherwise need to travel significant distances to access.

However, widespread public outcry led the district to suspend the program. Critics questioned the educational necessity and value of a robot assistant when students already possess smartphones with internet access. Concerns were also raised about the substantial cost and the potential for such technology to alienate students rather than engage them in learning.
