Nursing School Bans Marriage: Outrage Ensues
22 Apr
Summary
- GNM school issued a notice prohibiting female students from marrying.
- The civil surgeon immediately cancelled the order, calling it unlawful.
- The principal cited attendance issues and parental pressure as reasons.

A directive from the Hathua General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) School in Gopalganj, instructing female students against marriage during their academic term, has ignited significant controversy. The order threatened to remove students from college rolls if they married.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Birendra Prasad promptly invalidated the notice, emphasizing that a student's right to education cannot be limited by marital status. He confirmed no such provision exists within the health department or Nursing Council regulations.
A committee investigated the order, and its report was forwarded to the department for further action against the principal. The controversial notice, issued on April 16, was intended by the principal to address frequent disruptions caused by marriage proposals and subsequent extended leaves, impacting attendance and examination eligibility.
The principal acknowledged the absence of any government rule prohibiting marriage during nursing training and stated the notice was advisory. The directive has since been retracted.
