Nursery Teachers Get £4,500 Bonus for Key Areas
9 Jun
Summary
- £4,500 bonuses offered to qualified nursery teachers.
- Scheme targets 10 deprived communities to improve early years outcomes.
- Less than 10% of nursery staff currently hold graduate teaching qualifications.

A new incentive payment of £4,500 is being offered to qualified nursery teachers to encourage them to work in ten specific deprived communities. This scheme, now active, aims to enhance early years education outcomes in areas identified by deprivation and teacher shortages. The government selected Sandwell, Middlesbrough, Tameside, Rochdale, Bolton, Hartlepool, Rotherham, Dudley, Luton, and Barking and Dagenham for this initial phase, with plans for expansion.
Evidence shows a strong link between higher staff qualifications and better child development, yet fewer than 10% of nursery staff currently hold graduate teaching qualifications. This bonus seeks to attract and retain the most capable teachers in communities where children are most at risk of falling behind. Currently, only 58% of children in the most deprived areas reach the expected developmental level by the end of reception, compared to 77% in less deprived areas.
