10 Oct
Summary
- Parliamentary committee seeks legislative mechanism for NTA accountability.
- NEET (UG) 2026 exam cancelled due to paper leak allegations.
- Recommendations include age/attempt limits and two-stage exams.

A Parliamentary Standing Committee has called for a legislative framework to hold the National Testing Agency (NTA) accountable to Parliament. This demand follows the cancellation of the NEET (UG) 2026 exam due to paper leak allegations.
The committee emphasized that NTA's accountability is crucial for social justice and national integrity. It recommended robust security protocols, digitalization, and adequate staffing to counter adaptive examination fraud networks.
Further suggestions include implementing reasonable age and attempt limits for major exams like NEET-UG, excluding UGC-NET. The panel also proposed exploring a two-stage examination format, similar to the Civil Services exam, to reduce competition among medical aspirants.
Additionally, the committee advocated for a National Registry of blacklisted vendors and investment in continuously updated question banks developed by renowned experts from institutions like IITs and AIIMSs. It also highlighted a significant 41% vacancy rate within the NTA, urging permanent staff recruitment over deputation.
