NMC Fails to Update Doctor Registry
26 Aug
Summary
- 24,000 new doctors missing from national registry.
- NMC aims to re-register 11 lakh doctors.
- State registries not synced with national data.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is facing significant challenges in updating India's national medical registry. Despite plans to re-register approximately 11 lakh doctors, the commission has failed to accurately account for fresh medical graduates. Reports indicate that at least 24,000 doctors who qualified in 2025 are missing from the Indian Medical Register, a figure that rises substantially when foreign medical graduates are considered.
This shortfall is attributed to a failure in synchronizing state medical council registries with the national registry, a task mandated by the NMC Act of 2019. Many state councils regularly submit new entries, but these are not being reflected in the national database. For example, Assam and Kerala's medical councils report vastly lower registration numbers in the national registry than actual yearly enrollments, indicating a systemic issue with data integration.
