- BIS Student Chapter inaugurated to connect academia and standardization community
- BIS Director-General emphasizes need for young engineers to learn about standards

On September 9th, 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) inaugurated a BIS Corner and a BIS Student Chapter at the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T). The BIS Corner, located in the Central Library of NIT-T, will provide students and faculty with access to information on Indian standards, handbooks, and technical literature, enabling them to familiarize themselves with the frameworks that underpin quality, interoperability, and safety.
The BIS Student Chapter, also launched on the same day, will function as a platform for faculty mentors and students to collaborate with BIS through exposure visits, projects, research activities, and interactions with industry experts. This initiative aims to link classroom learning with the quality ecosystem and encourage young engineers to engage with the world of standards.
Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director-General of BIS, emphasized the critical role of standards in ensuring trust, competitiveness, and safety across various sectors. He urged the students and faculty of NIT-T to actively participate in technical committees and contribute to research in standardization, translating their innovations into globally accepted solutions aligned with Indian standards.
The collaboration between BIS and NIT-T is based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2022, and it is expected to enrich the academic pursuits at the institute and strengthen the bridge between academia and the standardization community.
