Members of Resident Doctors Association and Student Association of AIIMS Delhi, alongside faculty from several AIIMS branches and RML, are advocating for the immediate implementation of the National Exit Test (NExT) for MBBS students. They believe NExT offers a streamlined, competency-based assessment, addressing the inconsistencies and fragmentation found in current university and postgraduate entrance examinations.
The NExT, introduced via the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, was designed to be a singular qualifying examination. It is intended to replace the final MBBS exams, NEET-PG, and the FMGE. This unification aims to create a consistent, transparent, and clinically relevant evaluation framework for all medical graduates.
Proponents argue that current medical assessments vary widely in quality and fairness, with theory papers often subjective and content misaligned with national competencies. Furthermore, postgraduate entrance tests rely on limited MCQs, promoting rote learning over clinical skills. NExT seeks to standardize this, with Step 1 focusing on clinical vignettes and applied reasoning, and Step 2 assessing practical skills.
The implementation of NExT is seen as crucial for improving assessment validity and reliability, supporting student learning, and increasing institutional transparency. It will establish a national minimum standard for all graduates, regardless of their institution, thereby safeguarding public health and enhancing trust in the medical profession.
