NZ Visa Shake-Up: New Routes for Grads
16 Mar
Summary
- New Short-Term Graduate Work Visa planned from late 2026.
- Expanded Post Study Work Visa eligibility for degree holders.
- Updates aim to link international education with job market needs.

New Zealand is set to implement changes to its graduate work visa system starting late 2026, aiming to better align international education with the nation's workforce demands. A new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will be introduced, granting eligible international graduates up to six months of open work rights. This visa allows individuals to seek employment and potentially transition to longer-term work options.
The Post Study Work Visa is also seeing expanded eligibility. Graduates who hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas and complete a Graduate Diploma at level 7 in New Zealand will be able to apply. This visa can last up to one year, matching the duration of the graduate diploma study.
Officials confirmed the existing one-time rule for the Post Study Work Visa remains. However, unlike the short-term visa, Post Study Work Visa holders can sponsor family members for dependent visas. These updated pathways are designed to offer clearer routes for international graduates into employment and address labor shortages.
