From September 2027, schools will implement new food standards designed to enhance pupil nutrition. These updated regulations mandate an increase in the availability of fruits and vegetables on school menus.
Concurrently, deep-fried food items will be phased out, promoting healthier eating habits among students. Rob Fox, head teacher at Donnington Wood CofE Junior School in Telford, highlighted the importance of these changes for his pupils.
Fox stated that a significant portion of his students lack familiarity with various fruits and vegetables, underscoring an educational aspect to school meals. He stressed that school dinners are crucial for many children's daily intake, and the new standards will help ensure access to nutritious options.
While welcoming the healthier focus, Fox cautioned that schools must ensure the new meals are still appealing to children. He expressed a desire to avoid situations where healthy food is rejected, emphasizing the need for both nutrition and enjoyment in school dining.
