A significant development in Punjab's healthcare infrastructure is underway with the establishment of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji State Institute of Medical Sciences in Kapurthala. Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh announced that construction for this new government medical college will begin on March 25, with an expected completion by March 2028, taking 24 months.
The ₹275 crore project will host a 300-bed hospital and a medical college with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students. This will bolster the state's medical education and aim to prevent students from seeking education abroad. The institute will span over 5 lakh square feet and include advanced facilities.
Furthermore, the government hospital in Sultanpur Lodhi will be transformed into an urban centre, and the Begowal hospital into a rural centre, both to be affiliated with the Kapurthala medical college. This expansion is projected to create over 1,000 direct employment opportunities.
