Singapore Management University (SMU) is introducing a new Master of Public Governance and Leadership (MPGL) program, designed to prepare public leaders for the complexities of the digital era. Launched on October 29, 2026, the program addresses the growing need for expertise in AI governance, sustainability, and effective policymaking within Asia.
The MPGL curriculum emphasizes a blend of practical training and academic research. It includes practitioner mentorship, a policy capstone, and an immersive overseas learning experience in the Asian region. This approach is intended to bridge the gap between technological advancements and the governance capabilities required to implement them responsibly and equitably.
Recognizing the challenges public leaders face, such as skills gaps and difficulties in data access, the program offers two specializations: digital transformation and sustainability governance. These tracks aim to equip professionals with the analytical and leadership skills necessary to make well-informed decisions in a rapidly changing world. The inaugural cohort is expected to commence studies in 2027.
The program is primarily targeted at early-to-mid-career professionals in government, but also welcomes individuals from business, non-profit, and international organizations. SMU aims to enroll 25 part-time students for the first cohort, with plans to grow to 50 students per intake. Scholarships are available for eligible candidates.
