Net Zero School Beats Heatwave

Buntingford First School in Hertfordshire has become the first in England to achieve net zero carbon certification for both its construction and operation. This sustainable design allowed the school to remain open and maintain cool classroom environments during a recent heatwave, while over 1,000 other schools in England and Wales closed.

The school features north-facing classrooms, triple glazing, and a solar-powered cooling system. This innovative approach ensures occupant comfort using minimal energy, a key benefit of Passivhaus standards which address the significant energy consumption of buildings.

Architects designed the school to be resilient against future climate changes, using weather data from 2070 to ensure its long-term performance. The construction incorporated a laminated timber frame, saving substantial carbon emissions and reducing concrete usage through recycled materials.

With 184 solar panels and an air source heat pump, the school operates entirely without fossil fuels. Its airtight construction further enhances temperature regulation, keeping interiors warm in winter and cool in summer, contributing to a calm and conducive learning atmosphere for its 330 pupils.
